SHABBAT SHALOM

SHABBAT SHALOM

A series that is celebrating the foods and ceremonial items we use for Shabbat.

The Jewish Shabbat begins on Friday nights, from sundown to sundown the following day.
Jewish women light and bless Shabbat candles, before the entry of the Sabbath.  Once gathered at the table there is a blessing and short ceremony recited over a cup of wine or grape juice to welcome and sanctify the Jewish Sabbath, before the evening meal begins.
The blessing called 'HaMotzi' is recited over the specially prepared braided bread, called Challah and this bread is eaten for the Sabbath and other jewish holidays (I will add our family recipe so you can make it yourself!).  It is custom to have 2 loaves of Challah bread for the Friday night dinner, which is covered in a special challah-cover that is often decorated with Shabbat imagery or text.
